The May Festivities, as they are also known, are seasoned with a wide cultural and festive program, in which the characteristic Mascarons Parade stands out, which runs through the main streets on May 2 to the delight of the little ones.
FESTIVAL OF MAY - CROSS DAY
On May 3, Santa Cruz de La Palma celebrates the traditional Festival of The Cross (Fiesta de La Cruz). People decorate the crosses in many sites of the city. For many months, palmeros work carefully, decorating the crosses with flowers, colored papers, seeds and fabrics. The objetive is to make their neighborhood cross the most splendid of all.
Their main ingredients are imagination and devotion. The devotees stay on guard throught the night from May 2 to 3. Next to the cross and sometimes even on balconies and rooftops, the Mayos appear. These are almost life sized rag dolls that represent different scenes, some related to traditional life and others to the modern world.
