OUR<\/small>Holy Week<\/span><\/span><\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n

Declared a Festival of Tourist Interest in the Canary Islands, Holy Week in Santa Cruz de La Palma is one of the ones with the greatest personality, heritage wealth and charm of all those celebrated in the Islands.<\/p>\n<\/div> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n

Easter in Santa Cruz de La Palma is one of the most distinct and charming celebrations in the Canary Islands, as well as being one of the richest in heritage. Its main feature is the chronological time scale following the events of the Death and Passion of Christ: the street processions tell the story of the Evangelicals. This Protocol dates from the 17<\/span>th<\/span> century.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Furthermore, different traditions coexist in Santa Cruz de La Palma. They run parallel to each other consequently emphasising the order and underlining the theatrical tone of this celebration. As a result, only one scene of Christs Passions is played at a time, as happens also with the meeting of images or \u201cPoints\u201d. (There are two: one in the main square and the other in La Alameda.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The diverse imagery comes from different places: original carvings from 16<\/span>th<\/span> century Flanders, or colonial America, 18<\/span>th<\/span> century Seville workshops, or 19<\/span>th<\/span> century workshops in the Canary Islands. This period is characteristic of bringing forth the most distinguished works of sculptures from the Canary Islands, with works of art from the Fernando Estevez workshop, or from the island of La Palma itself.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Regarding the processions, those that take place in Santa Cruz de La Palma have, through the centuries, maintained a well-defined structure with Brotherhoods of \u201c<\/span>Capuchinos\u201d <\/span><\/i>(the local name for the Nazarenes).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Music is also an important element of our Holy Week with musical pieces such as \u201cEternal Love\u201d by the local composer Alejandro Henriquez. This piece may possibly be the oldest in the Canary Islands. We should also mention the motets, the \u201cchirimias\u201d (special wind instrument) and the \u201cPalmeras\u201d played throughout the different processions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sacred music concerts and expositions accompany this festival declared of Regional Touristic Interest.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n
